RYAN THOMPSON DESIGN – PERTH WA AUSTRALIA
How did you get started as a photographer?
My husband’s dad gave me his old Canon 600D when I had my son Lennox and I kicked off in manual straight away. It’s been years and my camera has become part of me!
What did life look like before photography?
I worked in law firms since I was 16. My first job was working for one of Perth’s best criminal barristers. I then went on to practice management, business development and marketing and have only just stepped away from that last year!

If you could photograph 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Families with newborns in beautiful homes. I love architecture and I love funky families who have an eye for aesthetic décor and dreamy spaces.
What is the best thing about your job?
Showing families that photoshoots don’t have to feel staged, forced or boring. Everyone of my clients message me saying they had a great time and they want to catch up for coffee – which I love! I often end up having my clients over with their kids to catch up down the track.
Tell us something we don’t know about professional photography …
Where do I start. I think it’s so important to voice how different an in-home newborn session is. It’s not just about the newborn – it’s all inclusive, fun, enjoyable, relaxed and simply YOU. It’s so chilled and is a gorgeous and enjoyable way to preserve your families journey that day as a whole.
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?
I think now… I would learn pottery or acrylic/oil painting. Something ridiculously creative and messy. Something I can pour my soul into and have it land in front of me. Even typing that and reading it on the screens makes me feel good.

If you could photograph someone famous, who would it be and why?
Princess Diana with her boys when they were newborns. What a woman.
